About Gladiators on Sky 1
Gladiators was reinvented for the 21st century in 2008 on Sky 1, incorporating elements water and fire. From 20,000 applicants, 32 of the UK's finest athletes were selected to face 12 all-new Gladiators in TV's toughest challenge in the hope of being crowned series champion and winning a £50,000 prize. Footballing legend Ian Wright and TV favourite Kirsty Gallacher were hosts, they were joined by original Gladiators referee John Anderson. The series was filmed on two giant sound stages at Shepperton Studios, home to blockbuster film productions including The Golden Compass, Atonement and Troy. Over 10.5 million individuals tuned into the first series, marking a triumphant return for Gladiators!
In 2009, 6 brand new Gladiators joined the team, alongside new host Caroline Flack and referee John Coyle, one of Britain's most respected boxing referees. Legendary Gladiator Wolf returned to the series to roar again as Gladiators team manager and mentor. 3 Events were also added to the pool of games, boosting the number to 12 in Season 2.
