Remembering American Gladiator Hawk (Lee Reherman)

The Gladiators community and fans worldwide mourn the loss of Lee Reherman, better known as Hawk from American Gladiators. A beloved figure both on and off the arena floor, Lee passed away unexpectedly on 1 March 2016 at the age of 49.

A Gladiator Legend

Lee Reherman joined American Gladiators in 1993, bringing a mix of charisma, athleticism, and determination that quickly made him a fan favourite. Known for his prowess in events like Powerball and Hang Tough, Hawk’s energy electrified audiences and inspired countless viewers. Lee’s impact extended beyond the United States when he represented America in two series of International Gladiators filmed in Birmingham, England, in 1994 and 1995. His natural charm and sportsmanship gained him legions of fans worldwide.

We lost a legend. We lost a great man. He won’t be forgotten. I will miss my friend.

Laser (Jim Starr)

Born on 4 July 1966 in Louisville, Kentucky, Lee excelled in both academics and athletics. A standout lineman at Cornell University, he served as team captain before pursuing a career in professional football. After trying out for the NFL’s Miami Dolphins, he transitioned into a career that showcased his brains as well as his brawn. Lee earned an MBA in finance from UCLA’s Anderson Graduate School of Management and began working towards a PhD in economics and business management.

Life Beyond Gladiators

After American Gladiators came to an end, Lee built a prolific career in television and film. He appeared in over 100 TV shows and movies, including The X-Files, NCIS, Gilmore Girls, and That’s So Raven. Lee also hosted several programmes, such as Speed Network’s Hot Rod TV and G4TV’s Arena, demonstrating his versatility and enduring appeal. His notable film credits include Last Action Hero (1993) alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger and Star Trek Into Darkness (2013).

Lee’s creative talents extended behind the scenes as well. He served as a producer for the American Veteran Awards on the History Channel and was working on The League, a documentary about Ivy League football, at the time of his passing.

If there’s a guy you wanna roll into battle with. If there’s a guy you wanna roll into a party with. If there’s a guy you want to be on your team. It was Lee Reherman.

A Life Remembered

On 5 March 2016, Lee’s family, friends, and fellow Gladiators gathered at Manhattan Beach Pier in California to celebrate his life. True to his vibrant personality, the tribute was held “Hawk Style”—no formal suits, no dark clothing—just sunshine, sand, and stories shared among loved ones. Attendees included American Gladiators alumni Laser (Jim Starr), Sabre (Lynn “Red” Williams), Nitro (Dan Clark), Zap (Raye Hollitt), and Ice (Lori Fetrick).

Lee’s passing was a shock to all who knew him. He was found unresponsive in his Manhattan Beach, California home by his girlfriend, Natalina Maggio. He had been recovering from hip replacement surgery and had reportedly not been feeling well in the days leading up to his death. Early reports suggested a possible blood clot, though the official cause was not confirmed.

Great guy. One of the most spectacular human beings I’ve ever had in my life.

Sabre (Lynn ‘Red’ Williams)

Our thoughts remain with Lee’s family, friends, and fans as we remember the incredible man behind the Hawk persona. Rest in peace, Hawkster.
