Remembering Falcon (Bernadette Hunt)

It is with great sadness that we report that our beloved Falcon (Bernadette Hunt) died on 14 March 2023 at the age of 59 after battling cancer for several years.

A True Gladiator

Bernadette Hunt entered the Gladiators arena as Falcon during the second series in 1993 and instantly became a firm fan favourite. She stayed with the show until its final series in 1999, becoming the second longest-serving female Gladiator. Known for her exceptional versatility, Falcon excelled in any event she tackled. Her combination of power and skill made her a formidable competitor, but her sportsmanship and kindness truly set her apart. Win or lose, Falcon always had a warm smile and congratulatory words for her competitors.

At 18, Bernadette Hunt was on the path to becoming a professional dancer, having been accepted into the London Contemporary Ballet School. Tragically, a back injury ended her dreams of dancing, but it was a turning point that led her to fitness and bodybuilding. Encouraged by her college lecturers, she began competing and quickly found success, earning titles such as Miss Natural Health 1992, Miss Novice Britain, Miss London and Home Counties 1992, and Miss South Britain.

Many fans will remember Falcon as the most lovely, warm, and generous person, with a beaming smile that lit up the arena. During her time on Gladiators, Bernadette was also known for her striking hairstyle, which became an iconic part of her Falcon persona, loved by fans across the country. Her kindness extended beyond the show, as she made time to chat with fans, sign autographs, and support charitable causes such as Help the Aged and Children with Leukaemia.

A Quiet Legacy

After Gladiators ended, Falcon chose a quieter life. She declined the opportunity to appear in Sky’s 2008 reboot of the series, preferring to keep a low profile. She focused her energy on being a fitness instructor, holding classes at Basingstoke Sports Centre, and visiting schools to promote healthy living. Falcon also continued to support fundraising events and charities, leaving a positive impact wherever she went.

As a mother to two children, Adam and Angel, Falcon balanced her family life with her career and charitable endeavours. Her dedication to both her loved ones and her community showcased the generous spirit fans had always admired.

I can remember when I auditioned [for Gladiators] and having no idea it would go on to become such a success. I first had an inkling when my son said, ‘Mummy, I like Gladiators. If you get on, it would be brilliant.’

Tributes from the Gladiator Family

Fondly nicknamed the “Dark Angel” by Panther (Helen O’Reilly), Falcon earned this title for her unique ability to combine strength and kindness in the arena. She was a fierce competitor who could dominate events, yet she was always the first to check on Contenders, congratulate them, and ensure they were okay after a challenge. Reflecting on their special friendship, Panther shared:

Falcon with her trademark hair style, smile and leather jacket.
Bernadette rocking her signature leather jacket—an iconic look from the early Gladiators days.

“From the moment we met in the boardroom during our first meeting at LWT HQ, with her leather jacket and her telling me she was a ‘ponk rokhar’ (punk rocker), we had a bond. She didn’t curse, even with financial inducement… surely no one could possibly be so nice, but yes, they could. Upon meeting her family and them all being exactly the same, it was clear this was no act.

Bernie immediately became my Dark Angel, which she found amusing, of course! My heart feels great sadness for her family. We can be assured that you are now without pain and in a place of peace where you can watch over your loved ones.”

Other Gladiators who worked alongside Falcon have shared heartfelt tributes, remembering her as a kind, generous, and inspirational teammate.
